Porsche Maus Gallery

Representing the Porsche Maus prototype (155 tons!) after capture by the Russians, I really tried to portray this thing in the condition I imagined it would be in- namely very abused. I referenced the sequence of photos during which the Russians had placed it on a flatbed train car for the move back to Russia in 1945. It features both the mix and matched hull and turret from both prototypes the V1 and V2. In the photos it looks very worn, dirty and in bad shape.

The kit is the Dragon kit 1/35 scale. The deck was horribly warped and presented the biggest challenge of the build. I boiled it in hot water and then glued it down inch by inch and adding Scotch tape as I went. I then did quite a bit of filling and sanding to get it to work. I additionally added some additional features around the external gas tank with masking tape, styrene and some photo etch and wire.

Painting of the hull and turret was done seperately as I wanted to convey the fact that these two items were combined by the Russians and would not have been painted together. I preshaded both with Tamiya Red Hull and then went over some areas with a home made rust color. I then preshaded the seams and edges with black. I then used masking fluid and a 3M pad to dab fluid around the edges and everywhere I saw paint chipping in the original photo. For the hull main color on the hull I used a coat of Tamiya Buff with a hint of yellow and white added and then lightened the centers of the panels with the same mixture with white added. The turret I used varying shades of dark yellow while the canon was masked off.

Camo was penciled in lightly and then freehanded with an airbrush using dark green that I added a bit more yellow to. The camo in the pics is rather rough and brushy so I went back over the camo with both dark and light greens to "roughen" it up. It has a mottled appearance. Tracks were sprayed with black and then a rust mix of brown and yellow.

After the masking fluid ws rubbed off with an eraser I began weathering. I used some oil paint filters on the hull using blue, red, yellow and white. On the turret I used a filter wash of burnt sieanna and white. I then did pin washes of black and burnt sieanna. Tracks got a wash of rusty oil colors. I then used a fine brush to add chips and rust spots. I used colored pencils to add variation to the masked rust patches and I used pigments and thinner to rust the barrel and the exhaust pipes. Tracks were muddied up with some children's pastel chalk and I dripped this solution onto the sides of the tank.

Hammer and sickle USSR emblem was hand painted.

The history of this tank and its connection to Porsche fascinates me.

Porsche Maus Project

Posting some pics of one of the 2 Maus prototypes found by the Russians at the end of WWII. THis will be my next project. Stay tuned...

Tiger VK4501 (P) Prototype Trials/Turret

This is one of the two Porsche prototypes that was tested. The Henschel turret wasn't ready so a concrete turret (weight simulator) was used. After extensive testing the engine was deemed unsuitable and the contract for the Tiger projectc went to Henschel. The 90 or so Porsche hulls were turned into the Ferdinand/Elefant which was a fixed gun assualt weapon. IT was a miserable failure on the battlefields of Russia and ITaly.

The hull is from the Italeri kit, the turret is a resin cast, and the airfilters and engine covers are scratch built.

1/16 R/C Tiger I: Road Wheels and Torsions Arms

Did some rough prepaint work. Mainly some red primer for all of the metal parts and Taniya White primer on the plastic. Then a quick coat of Dunkelgelb (tan yellow) behind the wheels and on the road wheels themselves. The rubber rimmed road wheels are really nice. The rims went on easily after I painted. They are then secured to the torsiona arms using tiny set screws.

The quarter in the one image gives you some visual scale. This thing is really big! When finished it will be 21" long.

Also shown is a view of the workshop: my kitchen table!

1/16 R/C Tiger I: Torsion Bars and Track Tensioner

Views showing some of the suspension work and the mechanisim that tensions the tank tracks. What isn't shown is the tnes of little tiny screws and bushings that my fat fingers keep dropping! I spend most of my time on my knees and hands searching the carpet for such items.

Remote Control 1/16 Scale Tiger I Early

This is the ultimate R/C tank kit of all time. Fully operational with working suspension/tracks, turret, canon, machine gun, and digital sounds based on one of two operational Tigers in the world.

As you can see I will have some help on this project.

Wirblewind Camo Finished

During the painting of the BR 52 locomotive, I also completed the Panzer IV Wirblewind. I did a late war/ Battle of the Bulge 3 color camo. Photos of these anit-aircraft tank are hard to come by so I am not recreating any specific tank.

At this point the interior anti-aircraft gun has been painted and assembled in the turret. I then masked it off and sprayed the exterior with Dark Yellow, Red Brown and Olive Green. Tracks were painted black and then had an oil wash of Burnt Sieanna applied. After painting the tank, I then put the tracks on.

BR 52 Finished

I finished all of the detail paint work: paint chipping, pastel dirt, pastel washes, etc.

However, I'm unable to get any great photographs due to my lighting limitations and depth of field issues.

So I am going to have a photographer friend photograph it for me....
stay tuned.

Washes and Drybrushing

Completed an all over black/burnt umber wash to "highlight" details. Then followed with a rusty wash of burnt sienna on the wheels and lower portions of the train.

Drybrushed raised features with a light gray.

Also applied some gray using a sponge over the yellow camo stripes to simulate paint wear.

Moving on to some wet pigment washes.

Camo Stripes Complete (fiasco to follow)

Masking fiasco 2006 began with the best of intentions. I sprayed these camo stripes out in the garage. It was so nice I thought it would be refreshing and relaxing to be in the fresh air. What I didn't think about was that without the fan in my spray booth pulling the paint laden air out of the area, I got horrible overspray all over the model and didn't realize it until I peeled the masking tape off. Anyway I spent another 3 hours going back over the gray area with ultra thinned gray paint. I took this opportunity to fade the edges of the sand yellow strips to soften the hard edge.

I then did a really diluted black wash on panel lines, edges and corners.

Onto the weathering and detailing!

Wirbelwind Build Complete!

While I was awaiting my new airbrush needle and all paint work on the loco had to stop, I built up Tamiya's Wirbelwind anti-aircraft vehicle. It is a Panzer IV tank chasis with a 4 barrelled 20MM anit-aircraft gun mounted on top in a special turret. Easy build (5 hours) and it is Tamiya, which always go together well and look great.

I will be doing a late-war Ardennes era paint job on it. This is the build out of the box with some gray primer on it.
