Whitewash winter camo was applied by the tankers in the field. That first Russian winter caught the germans by surprise. The makeshift, water based white paint was applied by brooms, hands and brushes over the standard dark gray color scheme that the intitial first Tigers had. This tank is similar to the first Tigers that ever saw action and were seen around Leningrad. I imagine this worn effect would be seen after a rough winter of fighting and moving. To create this effect:
1.Apply mineral spirits and white oil paint with a tiny bit of ochre with a brush. I painted the white camo shapes while looking at reference photos.
2. Let the spirits dry. About 20 minutes.
3. Lightly fill in the white shapes with acrylic based white paint. THis stuff dries quickly. In about 10 minutes or so you are ready for step 4.
4.Take an old stiff brush, load it with mineral spirits and start chipping away at the white paint. Chunks will come up eventually as the mineral spirits react to the oil paint easily but not the acrylic. A realistic worn paint effect is achieved.
