All late war german tanks had anti-magnetic paste applied to the vertical surfaces similar to drywall mud. This Zimmerit coating was usually applied with trowels by the tank crews. Each type of tank had a distinct pattern. Zimmerit prevented magnetic mines from sticking to the steel and doing major damage.
I used a two part epoxy putty (Miliput brand. It is used for porcelain and ceramic restoration) and a small metal-etched rake to create the horizontal ridges on the turret mantlet. This process takes multiple sessions since the epoxy takes about 8 hours to cure. In addition to the turret, I will need to do the front upper and lower hull, sides and rear in a similar fashion.
This is tedious, but it is necessary for tanks of the Normandy campaign to have this Zimmerit. There were no Tiger I's in Normandy without it. This practice stopped in late '44.
